Tell Gov. Tom Corbett: Stop the Asset Test for Food Stamps

Last fall, Miriam Boss (at right), an 87-year-old Northeast Philadelphia resident, applied for food stamp (SNAP) benefits for the first time in her life.

This month, Ms. Boss started a Change.org petition, urging Gov. Tom Corbett to stop the asset test for SNAP, which would toughen requirements for low-income Pennsylvanians seeking food assistance.

Under the asset test, most families would need to prove that their assets (including savings' accounts and second cars) fall below $5,500 to qualify for SNAP starting May 1, 2012.

Not only will the policy cut more than 4,000 families from SNAP, it will add more bureaucratic red tape that will make it harder for struggling families to get the help they need.

What's more, an asset test will cost Pennsylvania more state taxpayer money at a time when our state can't afford it.

You can do something about it. Read more about Miriam Boss and her petition at Change.org.
