President Trump’s budget proposes more than $190 billion in cuts to one of the most effective poverty-reduction programs in the country, making it even more challenging for Americans facing hard times to get back on their feet. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) helps struggling families and workers put food on their tables. These drastic proposed cuts would hurt millions of families, especially our most vulnerable loved ones and neighbors. Nearly two thirds of those who use the program are children, the elderly, or people with disabilities.
Simply put, SNAP works. When you’re able to cover a basic need like feeding yourself and your family, it allows you to get back on your feet more quickly.
Hunger is not a partisan issue. It hits every state, county and zip code. We must speak out so that our friends, family and neighbors receive support when they hit hard times. We must continue to contact our elected officials and tell them to protect these important benefits. And we must work towards a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives.
