No child should go hungry just because school is out.
Even as students prepare to go back to class, the Summer Meals program continues to operate through the end of this week.
Hundreds of sites are still open to provide free Summer Meals to kids and teenagers in our area. Sites can provide breakfast, lunch and snack.
We helped kick off the program in June with a host of partners including the Mayor’s Office, Nutritional Development Services, The Philadelphia Youth Commission and National Dairy Council Northeast at Aquinas Center in South Philadelphia, one of the more than 1,000 sites that were open at some point this summer.
In Philadelphia, millions of summer meals are provided each year, and yet only 15 percent of students in Pennsylvania who receive free and reduced priced meals during the school year also access summer meals. That ranks the state in the bottom half of the nation at 28th.
Program participation tends to lag in the beginning and end of the summer, however a coordinated effort was made this year by site sponsors to recruit sites to stay open through the end of August. The two largest site sponsors in our region are Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and Nutritional Development Services, each providing meals to hundreds of sites.
There are three simple ways to find a nearby Summer Meals site this week:
- Call the Coalition’s Summer Meals Hotline at 1-855-252-MEAL (6325)
- Text “FOOD” to 877-877
- Visit phillysummermeals.org for a searchable map of all sites in our region
