Hunger Doesn't Take a Vacation

Hunger doesn't take a vacation.

Summer vacation doesn't always bring back happy memories of sun-filled trips down the shore. For thousands of Philadelphia-area children, when they think of summer, they think of hunger.

Throughout the school-year, students can receive free or reduced price meals in school. However, once class lets out, students must turn to the free Summer Meals program to keep from going hungry. From June through August, we operate the Summer Meals Hotline and host the Summer Meals Map on our website. Through these tools, we are able to connect thousands of children to the nearest meal site in their neighborhood.

Last year, more than 1,400 sites in our region provided 4.4 million meals, but there are still many underserved areas of the city. The program only reaches about 20 percent of children who receive free or reduced price meals in area schools and the biggest reason for that is due to a lack of awareness about the program.
Please consider making a donation to support our Summer Meals Campaign. Philadelphia remains the poorest of the nation's 10 largest cities. For nine months out of the year, our children receive nutritious food at school. Together, we can reach more children to ensure that no child goes hungry simply because school is out.
