NOURISH YOUR SOUL COMMUNITY COOKBOOK For every donation of $50 or more, you will receive a free copy of the NOURISH YOUR SOUL COMMUNITY COOKBOOK
This collection of down-home recipes and equally homespun stories debuted in the fall of 2003. A former VISTA volunteer, who now is pursuing graduate studies in creative writing, devoted a year to interviewing soup kitchen and food cupboard volunteers, drawing out anecdotes, bits of history, and tidbits of wisdom along with mouth-watering recipes. Each vignette will move you closer to an understanding and appreciation of the too-often invisible world of Philadelphia ’s emergency feeding programs—the universe of tireless volunteers and the people they serve. Publishing these stories is yet another means of directing attention to the issue of hunger, and each cookbook sold is generating revenue to support the feeding programs.

Donations Needed By Community Feeding Programs

This fall, the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger surveyed over 150 soup kitchens and food cupboards in Philadelphia. Below are many of the things they said their feeding programs are in need of:

  • Institutional freezers and refrigerators
  • Food (in particular, protein items like meats; canned tuna, salmon and beans; and peanut butter; also canned vegetables; turkeys for Thanksgiving; other healthy, non-perishable foods; baby food and formula; nutritional supplements like Boost and Ensure)
  • Tables and chairs
  • Shelving
  • Cleaning products
  • Paper goods, disposable utensils, cups and plates, paper or plastic bags, tin foil pans
  • Diapers
  • Computers
  • Dependable, consistent volunteers and volunteers for leadership positions

To donate any of these items, please call Tanya at 215-430-0555 and she will connect you with the appropriate community feeding program.  Thank you for your generosity!
