Healthy Eating on a Budget

Ever wondered how much sugar is in a can of soda?  The answer might surprise you: Up to 12 teaspoons—more than what's recommended for an entire day.

Starting this summer, the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger presents “Healthy Eating on a Budget,” a series of  nutrition workshops that offers attendees simple, budget-friendly tips on shopping and preparing nutritious meals for their families.

“We help people every day with the challenge of getting SNAP (food stamp) benefits; now we’re trying to help them work through other barriers, such as finding healthy foods and knowing how to prepare them,” says Community Nutrition Program Manager Tanya Sen, who leads the classes.

Each nutrition workshop includes two sessions, complete with interactive games and fun prizes. The first class covers nutrition basics, giving participants an overview of the nutrients they need and what foods provide them. The second class includes cooking demos, showing participants how to prepare affordable and nutritious meals that the entire family will enjoy.
