Media Advertising Campaign
More than half of the Coalition's screenings for food stamp eligibility take place via the Food Stamp Information Hotline. In order to get the word out about food stamps and the services the hotline offers, the Coalition runs advertising campaigns geared to reach low-income Philadelphians who may qualify for the program but are not receiving benefits.
For the past three years, the Coalition has run a major advertising campaign on SEPTA, the region's public transportation system. Interior and exterior posters on the Broad Street line, the Market-Frankford el, and bus lines throughout the city feature advertisements designed to encourage riders to call the Food Stamp Information Hotline to receive a food stamp screening and application assistance. The SEPTA advertising campaign is a powerful way to get the food stamp message out - it generates more calls to the hotline than any other referral source and reaches residents in all parts of the city.
In addition to paid advertising, the Coalition has been fortunate to find generous partners to donate publicity and help spread the word about the Food Stamp Program and the hotline. The Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) has been a major partner for two years now.
Last February, this advertisement appeared in PGW's consumer newsletter, "Good Gas News." The newsletter was inserted into envelopes with gas bills, and the food stamp message was delivered to 500,000 households in Philadelphia. As a result, hundreds of Philadelphians called the hotline and received help, just as they were facing the "heat or eat" dilemma last winter.
The Coalition thanks its many partners for their support.
