KYW Newsradio: Thousands Turn Out for Hunger Walk/Run in Philadelphia
by KYW’s Michelle Durham
Thousands of people packed the Art Museum area for a walk and run to fight against Hunger.
More than 316,000 residents in the area received help from a food pantry in 2009 and the number of people who need help is growing.
The 14th Annual 5K walk and run and it raises money for more than 100 Food pantries, soup kitchens and other agencies in our area like the Food Bank of South Jersey.
Mario Partee works there:
"We've seen a 40% increase in hunger at our food bank. The awareness is so important that the face of hunger is changing it could be your neighbor or friend at school."
Many families decided to participate together like Stacey:
"I'm here with my step son Darryl and my two other children and my husband. I've wanted to do something as a family for a long time and it is a perfect day to get out and walk for hunger!"
More than 3500 people participated in the event.
