KYW NEWSRADIO: Food Pantries Depend on Saturday's Walk Against Hunger

Apr. 8

This Saturday is the annual Walk Against Hunger which will benefit more than 100 food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the area.

Representatives of food panties and soup kitchens around Philadelphia and South Jersey meet every spring to compare notes and offer each other support. Teresa Reid is with the Calvary Agape Community Outreach in Southwest Philadelphia.

"It seems like every week, we're getting more and more new applicants coming in for food."

Saturday's annual Walk Against Hunger and 5K run will benefit the area's feeding programs which are under more and more strain as more and more people look for more and more ways to put more food on the table.

Erskine Dale runs a pantry out of Saint Philip's Lutheran Church at 53rd and Wyalusing:

"Yeah, we've been getting more people lately. I think with the economy and all, more people need food."
