Nearly 1 in 7 people in the greater Philadelphia region rely on food stamps (now known as SNAP). For the rest of us, the Greater Philadelphia Food Stamp Challenge offers a glimpse into their lives.
From April 23-29, lawmakers, journalists and more than 130 concerned citizens pledged to live on just $5 of food a day—the average food stamp benefit in Philadelphia.
Participants made tough food-shopping choices and, for one week, saw firsthand how important SNAP benefits are to so many families in our region.
