Why Are Summer Meals Important?
Summer is the hungriest time of year for children in Philadelphia. During the school year, more than 134,000 children eat breakfast or lunch at school. But when summer arrives and school is out, many low-income children can no longer count on school meals. Their risk for hunger and malnutrition rises during the summer, affecting their health and learning ability.
The summer meals program fills that gap by providing nutritious meals and snacks to children in low-income areas during the summer, when school is out.
Spread the Word!
Many low-income children who need summer meals aren’t getting them. In 2009, nearly 90,000 children ate summer meals in Philadelphia. But that’s at least 44,000 fewer than the number of children who received school meals during the school year.
With more than 1,000 sites providing free summer meals in Philadelphia, no child should go hungry this summer.
Summer meals are made available by the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option. In Philadelphia and across the state, the program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Local sponsors include the Philadelphia Department of Parks & Recreation; the Philadelphia Housing Authority; the Philadelphia School District; Nutritional Development Services, Archdiocese of Philadelphia; and Congregation Beth Solomon.
