Working Together
Constituents often expect their elected representatives to have the perfect solutions to some very complex problems. This week, let your elected official know that what you are asking them is difficult – but don’t let them off the hook! Offer your assistance, and make sure they are aware of community groups you believe they should be including in strategic conversation.
Below is some sample language to get you started. Please modify it so as to make these letters your own. Contact information can be found here.
Dear ________ (Rep. Brady, Mayor Nutter, Sen. Casey & Toomey, Your US Rep, Your State Rep & Sen)
As a person of faith, I am deeply concerned about the people in my region who are struggling with food insecurity and hunger. Last week I wrote to you asking for your leadership in developing a comprehensive plan to combat hunger in Philadelphia (and ultimately beyond!).
I recognize that such plans will require cooperation from all levels of government officials, leadership by members of both political parties, new and creative thinking from practitioners, and cooperation from community groups/organizations who are willing to actively partner with policymakers.
Please know that my study group and others using the City Soup curriculum are prepared to partner and assist in any way we can. It is vitally important that we act on behalf of those among us who do not have the opportunity to reach their full potential simply because they do not have enough to eat. This is both a moral, economic and public health issue, and it requires your immediate attention.
Sincerely,
Name, a member of _________________ (name of Congregation), journeying with others in the region to study hunger as a part of City Soup Philadelphia www.hungercoalition.org/citysoup
